Julie Scott is Associate Professor of Practice and Co-Chair of Music Education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she has taught for 11 years. She earned a Ph.D. from Eastman School of Music in 2010, where she was Assistant Professor (Teaching) of Music Education for one year. Besides teaching at SMU, Dr. Scott served as director of the 100-voice Lewisville Independent School District 5th Grade Honor Choir for 8 years. This choir was invited to perform under her direction for the Texas Music Educators Conference in 2012 and in 2004. Prior to teaching at the college level, Dr. Scott taught elementary music in Texas schools for 17 years and served as Elementary Music Coordinator for the Richardson Independent School District for two years. She has directed children’s choirs in schools and churches for over 30 years. In addition, she is a past president of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
Dr. Scott is Director of Music Educators Workshops at SMU, and she has taught summer Orff Schulwerk courses to adults at eight universities over the past 25 years. She has presented over 100 conference sessions and workshops at national conferences, state music educators associations, school districts, and Orff chapters throughout the US. Dr. Scott has presented sessions at conferences outside the US for the International Society for Music Education (Scotland, Greece, China, and Italy); for the International Kodály Society (Scotland and Australia); for the College Music Society (Thailand); and for the Australian National Council of Orff Schulwerk (Australia).
Dr. Scott was a contributing author to the 2010 Pearson Education textbook series Making Music. She has published articles on various topics related to singing, Orff Schulwerk, and improvisation in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, The Orff Echo, The Southwestern Musician, and General Music Today. In addition, she contributed a chapter titled “Instruments in the Elementary Music Classroom” to Engaging Musical Practices: A Sourcebook for Elementary Music, edited by Suzanne Burton and Alison Reynolds, which will be published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2017.
